Birthday

This was a week for birthdays! Saturday we went to a birthday party for the son of a recent convert. He was turning five. Especially for my amigos in Mrs. Armstrong's class I thought that it would be fun for you to see a birthday party in Argentina. Maybe you will find it isn't so different.
First of all, the family rented out a children's fun center called Jambo. The place had big inflatable toys and mazes for the kids to play in. They had arcades and even a zip line!

The mom spent three days making food for the party. You will see in the picture several things that I mentioned earlier are typical Argetine foods. Remember how I told you that they love olives? Can you see them? You can also see in the picture near the bottom are the most famous Argentine treat: alfajores. They are cookies filled with what they call dulce de leche and covered in shredded coconut. You can also see in the picture empanadas.
We sang happy birthday (in Spanish of course!), he made his wish and blew out the candles.
I think it is amazing that a tradition, such as a birthday, can be so similar no matter where you go in the world. These children are younger than you, but really you are not that different. They like to play just like you do and they have cakes with candles and gifts from their friends. Although the food and clothing may differ, we are all the same really.
What do you think?

Andrea & Emma - I haven't been to a quincienera yet but I have heard all about them. I am glad you reminded me. I wanted to share with the class about that. The most important birthday is 15 (in the U.S. 16 is the big year) When Sister Lindahl was getting her haircut I talked to a girl named Julieta that was getting her hair done to go to one of these quincienra parties. Julieta told me that it is common here in Argentina for the girls to decide between a HUGE and formal birthday party or a trip to Disneyworld for 10 days. Juliet's mother hoped that Juliet would choose the Disneyworld trip because, she said, that would be CHEAPER than the party. Does that give you any idea how expensive and elaborate these parties are? It is unbelievable!

Emily & Maddy- I like that tradition! What would you eat or where would you go?

Junior & Adreck - my Birthday was great. Thanks for the wishes. And I did get money for my birthday but I haven't spent it yet.

Emily - how did all that taste like? It was good. My favorite were the empanadas. I really like those.

Lucas - I was too big for the zip line sadly enough. Believe me, if they would have let me I would have done it for sure!

Cordon - That is a really good question. I am going to have to ask more about the school system here but they DO go to school just like you. They have homework just like you. One thing that is definitely different is that because their summer time is November - February (more or less)that is when they have summer vacation. I personally think that you have the better deal because they don't Christmas break during their school year - it is during their summer vacation.
Oh - and I really like your idea for your 26th birthday! That sounds cool!

Kiriana - do the children in Argentina have a playground. They certainly do! In fact, when Argentina was first being settled it was ruled by Spain and Spain had a rule that every four blocks the city had to have a plaza. The city still today has tons of these plazas. What is a plaza? It is a block of land with trees, sometimes fountains, benches and usually playgrounds.

Margaret - I think that ziplines are cool too. My brother did some traveling this year too and he got to do a giant zip line that flew him over a jungle. His pictures looked awesome. Wouldn't that be fun?
